K9 Mac receives body armor donation: Buffalo Grove Village


BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. — K9 ​​Mac has been a busy dog ​​since joining the Buffalo Grove Police Department in June. The 2-year-old sable German shepherd performs narcotics detection, tracks and locates crime suspects and missing people, and searches in a variety of environments.

K9 Mac will soon be safer in the field thanks to a donation of a bulletproof and stab-resistant vest. The donation comes from the nonprofit organization Veasted Interest in K9s, Inc. Officials expect the bulletproof vests to arrive within the next 8 to 10 weeks.

K9 Mac’s handler is Officer Shannon McMillon, who has been with the Buffalo Grove Police Department since 2014. It is estimated that there are approximately 30,000 law enforcement K9s across the United States.

Founded in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose mission is to provide bullet- and stab-resistant vests and other support to police and agency dogs across the United States, according to a news release from the Village of Buffalo Grove. This potentially life-saving body armor is made in the USA, custom-fitted and NIJ-certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided more than 5,379 vests, valued at $6.9 million, to K9 dogs in all 50 states through private and corporate donations.

Based in East Taunton, Massachusetts, Vested Interest accepts tax-deductible donations of any amount, with each donation of $985 supporting one vest valued at $1,800. The armor weighs an average of 4 to 5 pounds. For more information about Vested Interest, visit the organization’s website here.
